WELCOME CYCLISTS NETWORK
By means of excellent pave roads, this bicycle ( bike, cycle ) route ( trail ) is located just an hour or so from Kingston and Ottawa, 45 minutes from Perth.
AT SHARBOT LAKE AREA
Here, you're cycling in another world. Bike (mountain and road) routes/trails are near the Mississippi River where it breaks over the shearline of the Canadian Shield. As a part of your bike trip, try kayaking with Adventure Agent.
A general store and Petro-Canada gas station is located at the intersection of Highway 7 and Road 38.
There are three routing options here.
A remote section of Rails-to-Trails type of cycle route extends from the east side of the General Store (Petro-Can gas bar) at Sharbot Lake. This section is very remote for some distance. It is over-grown, and virtually non-existant, so expect some hard going, and in insect seasons, to be besieged. Nonetheless, it is there.
A far more "normal" form of "Rails-to-Trails" exists on the railbed of the former Kingston to Pembroke rail line. The K&P was also known as the Kick and Push Railway. It got that nickname because passengers had to get off the train at certain places and actually help push the train uphill. The rail serviced remote hamlets like Robertsville, Mississippi Station, Snow Road Station, Clarendon Station (home of the annual Blue Skies Music Festival).
This trail runs from "downtown" Sharbot Lake and passes under Highway 7, just west of the PetroCan General Store. It runs parallel to Road 509, the main northerly access to the wilderness of eastern Ontario, right up past Snow Road Station.
The route here is more normal, being of gravel. The route is moderately hilly, and tree-surrounded. You will pass over wooden bridges over creeks. You can cycle right up to Snow Road Station. You will be some distance inland from Road 509 and you are fully independant for self-support. Upon occasion you may pass by some lived-in structures.
For a paved road route, Road 509 is an excellent alternative cycle route, with standard-width shoulders.
At the Snow Road Station area, road shoulders on the Elphin-Maberly (two hamlets on this roadway) Road at places are about a foot wide.
